weareDaniel was founded by Koen Thewissen and Tim Smits after they enjoyed working together on the development of the new Belgian food pyramid.
Koen Thewissen
I worked for 10 years as a brand- and communication strategist for BBDO in Belgium and China. I left BBDO to start the Belgian Advertising School (www.belgianadschool.be) and to found weareDaniel. I am fascinated by how the way we communicate can change the way people think, feel and act. I believe that changing people is the only way to change the world.

I am a professor advertising science, persuasion and marketing communication at the University of Leuven. In my research I focus on persuasion processes and on the effectiveness of marketing communication. Throughout my academic work, I focus on the impact of design, messaging and subtle cue effects on human behaviour.

I’ve spent the past years researching human psychology to come up with ideas for effective behaviour change. Before joining weareDaniel, I worked as the Insights Lead at the Behavioural Design Agency SUE Amsterdam, where I helped design and lead the Behavioural Design Academy in my role as director. I get most excited when behaviour change interventions are part of a valuable service or magical experience.

I’ve always been fascinated by the magic that happens when smart people work together. Whenever I have a spare moment I read up on research about team effectiveness and creative facilitation. Before joining weareDaniel, I worked as a project manager trainee at Wunderman Thompson and I coordinated events tailored to young audiences at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (Antwerp). My personal mantra throughout everything I do: People first.
